Collin lost his first tooth today.
It had been loose for quite some time it seems. Every day Lisa and I would keep at him, telling him to wiggle it this way and wiggle it that way. But Collin, being the stubborn child that he is, stayed strong in his ways. This tooth was coming out on his terms. Until today.
Earlier in the day there was a little mishap. Two LEGOs were stuck together. Collin did the best he could to pry them apart with his little fingers, but that was no good. So he resorted to his teeth. A few seconds later, a startled Collin was sobbing and bleeding from the mouth. The loose tooth had been pulled forward way beyond it's usual wiggle room. I ran him into the bathroom to clean him up and calm him down. Even though I knew in my head it was time for the tooth to come out, I did not think it was the best time to discuss that with him. So instead, we walked to get ice cream.
Fast forward to dinner time.
Mommy arrives home from work just as I get the dinner on the table. As we are all sitting down, we tell her about the little incident that happened. Collin lets her know how much it hurt and how much blood came out. So Lisa starts talking about getting out the string and tying one end to the tooth and the other end to the door. Collin's eyes got big as his hand moved up to his tooth.
"Will it hurt?" he asks.
Both Lisa and I comfort him and let him know that the main reason that it is hurting is because it needs to come out. The gums around the tooth were becoming sore and that was where the pain was coming from, and once the tooth comes out there will be no more pain.
I don't remember exactly what Collin said at that moment, mainly because I didn't think anything was going to happen at that very moment. That and there was food in front of me. But he said something to the equivalent of "Well then" and reached back up to the tooth and flat out yanked it out.
"Look, it's out!" he said triumphantly.
Lisa and I couldn't believe it. It took talking about tying a piece of string to it and slamming the door to get Collin to just pull the dang thing out himself. Lisa joked that it was his stubborn side. He wasn't going to let any door take all the credit.
For the next 30 minutes or so we discussed things like the tooth fairy and how much money he'll get for leaving it under the pillow, as well as all the other teeth that he will be loosing in the future. We even talked about the dentist's office and all the cool tools that he has there.
Collin looked, sounded, and I'm sure felt like a pretty big boy. And as soon as both Lisa and I thought that, he changed the subject with, "I wish my last name was octopus."

Colin Octopus does have a nice ring to it.
Morgan was also scared initially to have her loose teeth pulled out. I was too, when I was a kid. Good for Colin on just yanking it out! And good for you two on being straight with him. Nicely done, Mr & Mrs. Octopus!
He put some serious thought into that name. He actually prefers "Kid" Octopus.
I think Collin Octopus sounds too much like a medical procedure.
Hilarious. I laughed out loud when I read that. Mostly because it doesn't surprise me one bit.
Kid Octopus! Sounds like he could be a boxer in Punch Out!
I think he was hinting the he is not money motivated. Let him change his name to Kid Octopus as an reward.
Glad the tooth is finally out! And that is one of the funniest "Collin stories" yet. I have no idea how you and Mrs. O keep a straight face.
Kid Octopus is going to be my next improv team name.
